497,404 504,760
The first number is the number of signatures received by Stop SB48. The second number is the number of signatures needed to qualify the referendum.
Some will find encouragement in those numbers-we came close.
Others will be discouraged-with just a little more effort...
We did come close. But we should put that in perspective. Realize that some amount of signatures will always be thrown out because of errors. Ultimately we needed many more than the 504,760 to qualify the referendum. We simply ran out of time before we could get to that number.
While we did not qualify the referendum, our efforts did not go unnoticed. We gained more than 497,000 signatures without the use of paid signature gatherers. That is unprecedented. And we did this on a small fraction of the budget traditionally required to gather that many signatures.
In emails and phone calls over the last 24 hours, two questions have dominated. The first question is answered by the numbers above. The second question is "where do we go from here?"
While the referendum was the best way to stop SB48 in its tracks, there are other ways for the citizens of California to respond to bad laws. We are discussing our next move and will keep you informed as decisions are made.
We lost this most recent battle. But with your help we will fight on.

The news is not good
The news is not good. Finally with two days in a row of no mail delivery, collection points around the State were able to get a good estimate of how many signatures we have in hand. While we expect to have a large amount arrive today and even Wednesday (the day we need to turn petitions in) it is doubtful we will get the number of signatures we need to qualify.
Unfortunately, the last several deliveries of mail have not been what was expected and a large number of petitions have been pulled out because of errors.
From all appearances, we would need a miracle to qualify this referendum.
But many of those close to the referendum campaign believe in miracles and want to fight until the very last minute. Are you in?
The only possible scenario for snatching victory from the jaws of defeat is a 24 hour petition marathon. But we need more than just 10 people or even a hundred. We need a thousand people or even more that will start this morning and gather every signature they can. 50 signatures. 100. Even more.
We have petition centers around the State and we will be delivering petitions where we can. We will set up delivery points around the State for Tuesday and up until 10:30 am on Wednesday morning for completed petitions.
But we need volunteers to gather signatures and volunteers to gather more volunteers. And we need you to start as soon as you get done reading this.
If you can help us over the next 24 hours please let us know. Contact us by phone or email and let us know if you need petitions, if you can organize volunteers to collect petitions, if you can deliver petitions or help in some other way. Call La Tanya at 916-498-1940 extension 10 and/or email her at LaTanya@stopsb48.com.

'LGBT' Role Models Bill Goes to Jerry Brown
California Democrats pass SB 48, most in-your-face sexual indoctrination yet

Sacramento, California -- A highly-controversial bill mandating that "lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender" role models must be placed in history and social science textbooks has been sent to the desk of Governor Jerry Brown after passing the California State Assembly.
Today, the Democrat-controlled Assembly, on a 49 to 25 party-line vote -- Democrats for, Republicans against -- approved SB 48 by openly homosexual state Senator Mark Leno. The bill already passed the California Senate in April.
"May this brash attack upon children's innocence finally motivate parents to remove their children from the government school system, and get them into the safe havens of church schooling and homeschooling," said Randy Thomasson, president of SaveCalifornia.com, a leading statewide pro-family organization promoting moral virtues for the common good.
"This sexual brainwashing bill would mandate that children as young as 6 years old be told falsehoods -- that homosexuality is biological, when it isn't, or healthy, when it's not," Thomasson said. (Source: "Not Born This Way")
"Parents don't send their sons and daughters to school to learn to admire homosexuality, bisexuality, cross-dressing, "sex change" operations, homosexual "marriages," or to support legal persecution of people who disagree," Thomasson said. "There's already a raft of school sexual indoctrination laws on the books. Impressionable children are already being sexual indoctrinated, but SB 48 would be the most in-your-face brainwashing yet. We urge Governor Brown to respect parents, remember basic academics, and basic family values, and veto this bad bill when it reaches his desk."
"True history focuses on the accomplishments of people -- it doesn't talk about what they did in the bedroom," Thomasson said. "Sadly, SB 48 prohibits teachers from providing students with the facts about these lifestyles. Male homosexuality has the largest transmitter of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, along with higher cancer rates and earlier deaths, but it will be illegal for teachers to teach children these facts to protect their health and their lives."
If SB 48 becomes law:
1. Textbooks and instructional materials must positively promote "lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans" as "role" models.
2. Children as young as 6 years old will be taught to admire homosexuality, same-sex "marriages," bisexuality, and transsexuality (cross-dressing and "sex change" operations).
3. Children will be taught to support the political activism of "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Questioning" (LGBTIQ) political groups, as the bill requires "particular emphasis on portraying the role of these groups in contemporary society."
4. Teachers will be made to positively portray homosexuality, same-sex "marriages," bisexuality, and transsexuality, because to be silent can bring the charge of "reflecting adversely" or "promoting a discriminatory bias."
5. School boards will be required to select textbooks and other instructional materials that positively portray "LGBT" lifestyles, because to be silent on these subjects opens them up to charges of "reflecting adversely" or "promoting a discriminatory bias."
6. Parents will not be notified, nor will they be able to exempt their children, from this new core curriculum.
"California government schools are no longer morally safe for impressionable children," Thomasson said. "Because of the raft of sexual indoctrination laws already in force, which promote homosexuality, bisexuality, and transsexuality under the guise of 'discrimination' and 'harassment,' the social engineers are already having their way with more than six million boys and girls, with or without SB 48. That's why we strongly urge loving parents to rescue their children by permanently removing them from government schools and placing them in the safe havens of church schools or homeschooling." Bill Aims to Increase Parents' Involvement in Schools
Sacramento, CA - As school districts face huge budget gaps, a recently-introduced bill in the California legislature aims to build parent-school partnerships by reducing tension and increasing communication in several areas that have often led to conflict.
The bill, AB 1348, is sponsored by Assemblyman Allan Mansoor. It requires both involvement and oversight by parents in four areas: mental health screenings and testing of students; facilitation of confidential medical services for minors; instruction in comprehensive sex education; and surveys, tests and questionnaires that affect familial privacy.
Pacific Justice Institute has sent a letter of official support for AB 1348 to the legislative committee considering the bill. The letter points to numerous studies confirming that parental involvement is crucial to students' academic achievement and social adjustment. PJI Chief Counsel Kevin Snider, who wrote the letter and has studied the bill, commented, "We believe this bill carefully balances the concerns we are hearing from educators seeking greater parental involvement at school with parents who want to avoid being blindsided by instruction or services that may clash with their values. For this reason, we are optimistic that this bill can attract bipartisan support."
Pacific Justice Institute has long advocated for increased parental notification and consent statutes, while strongly encouraging parents to build positive relationships with teachers and school officials by volunteering in the classroom and serving on school committees.
Parents should call their legislators to urge support for AB 1348. The bill's content and status can be viewed at www.leginfo.ca.gov."

Defeat of tax-hike scheme a big victory for California families
Sacramento, California – Longtime pro-family leader Randy Thomasson says California families are the winners in the battle over more taxes on Californians' purchases, income, and cars, and a sharp reduction of the child tax credit.
Today, Democrat Governor Jerry Brown, and the three Republican state senators who had been pushing hardest for other financial reforms in exchange for a multi-year tax hike, said the talks were over and the tax-hike scheme, requiring a two-thirds vote of the Legislature, will not be on this summer's ballot.
"Hard-working families raising their children or grandchildren can breathe a sigh of relief that two years of oppressive tax hikes on purchases and car registration will expire on July 1," said Randy Thomasson, president of SaveCalifornia.com, which, since early January, has been helping concerned Californians to demand that Republican state legislators defeat the tax-hike scheme.
"California families are the winners here because our bloated government will be cut down to size instead of taking more money from fathers' wallets and mothers' purses," Thomasson explained. "However, our elected leaders should eliminate tens of billions of dollars annually in systemic waste, fraud, duplication, and inefficiency, instead of coddling wealthy government unions and slashing basic government functions."
Governor Brown and Democrat state legislators had sought to continue to the historic tax hikes of 2009 on purchases (increasing the sales tax by 1.00%), income (up 0.25%), and car registration (from 0.65% to 1.15%). They were also seeking to continue dramatically reducing the child tax credit from $309 to $99 per child.
According to the Tax Foundation, California's state and local tax burden of 11.8% of income is well above the national average of 9.8%; California's sales tax is highest in the nation; California's top individual income tax rate is third-highest in the nation; California's business tax climate ranks 49th in the nation; and California's corporate income tax rate is the highest among Western states.

Student files suit to defend his right to bring Bible to school.
San Diego, CA - A former student at Gateway East High School of the Grossmont Union High School District has filed suit against GUHSD, saying he was disciplined and suspended for sharing his faith with fellow students and for bringing his Bible to school. The student is represented by Pacific Justice Institute.
The conflict for Kenneth Dominguez began when he returned from Christmas break in January 2010 and began telling his fellow students about his Christian faith. On several occasions he was reprimanded for doing so and eventually he was told not to bring his Bible to school. An administrator told him that he could not share his Christian faith with fellow students or bring his Bible to school because of separation of church and state. When he continued to discuss his faith and bring his Bible to school he was given a 2 day suspension on February 18, 2010.
The school gave him a form known as a "Corrective Education Referral Form," which had the following notations:
*
"Student was told to stop preaching at school. Student continued after being warned several times."
*
"Student will not bring Bible to school."
Attorney Michael J. Peffer, who heads the Southern California office of Pacific Justice Institute, commented, "No student should be forced to leave his faith and Bible at the gate when he enters school grounds. We are looking forward to this opportunity to vindicate Mr. Dominguez and protect students throughout California."
